Non-Smoking/Tobacco Use Program

Deciding to quit smoking and / or tobacco use is always the first step to better health. When you stop using tobacco, you not only improve your general health but you also greatly reduce your risk of several cancers, coronary heart disease, ulcers, and stroke. There are also other great reasons to quit using tobacco such as; gaining control of your life, feeling better about yourself, setting a good example for others (especially children), and not exposing others to “second-hand smoke”.

Cigarette buttIn order to encourage you to stay healthy, you will be awarded 75 Health is Wealth points if you complete a Smoking/Tobacco Use Cessation program or complete the Non-Smoker/Tobacco User Certification.

Smoking Cessation—Kicking the Habit
This is a six-week program designed to help tobacco users quit. It is based on behavior modification and is offered through the IGHL Employee Assistance Program. Any tobacco user who wants to quit will benefit from the sessions. Each session is 2 hours long and incorporates mini-lectures, group discussions, practical learning, and tracking your progress.

Objectives of the program are:

  • Examine personal motives for using tobacco.
  • Complete an individual profile about tobacco use.
  • Explore psychological, emotional, and physiological aspects of tobacco use.
  • Establish a buddy system as a key technique for getting and staying tobacco free.
  • Identify healthy alternatives to tobacco use.
  • Develop strategies for breaking the tobacco habit.
  • Set a quit date.
  • Identify resources for ongoing recovery, including relapse management.

Time required will be 2 hours each week for six weeks. Sessions shorter than 2 hours prevent people from discussing their experiences and learning from each other. The group interaction requires patience and time and is a critical part of developing an effective buddy system. We welcome your spouse and dependent children to attend classes with you.
